Dr. Marvin Washington (Ph.D., Northwestern University / Kellogg Graduate School of Management), is a most known as a Pracademic (practicing academic). The focus of his research, teaching and consulting work is on organizational and institutional change. His research has been published in some of the top management, organization, and sport management journals in the world. In addition to the many academic articles he has written and presentations he has made, Dr. Washington has also written three practitioner books focused on leadership, strategy, and organizational change: Leading Peak Performance: Lessons from the Wild Dogs of Africa (Stephen Hacker and Marvin Washington, 2007), Successful Organizational Transformation: The Five Critical Elements (Marvin Washington, Stephen Hacker and Marla Hacker, 2011) and, Lead Self First Before Leading Others (Stephen Hacker and Marvin Washington, 2018).
Over the past 20 years, Dr. Washington has taught leadership development to a wide array of organizations. Most notably, he was the Academic Director for the Alberta Health Services executive education program as well as the Academic Director for the Director’s Education Program. Dr. Washington has also worked with organizations such as Enbridge, AIMCo, Blue Cross, YMCA, Parkland Fuels, Syncrude, and SportChek, many ministries and departments in the Country of Botswana, the state of Oregon, Government of Alberta and the City of Edmonton. Most recently, he has worked with Shaw cable, Canadian Brewhouse and Strathcona Utilities on a variety of leadership and diversity initiatives.
Currently he is a professor of management at Portland State University. Prior to that he spent 15 years at the University of Alberta and 5 years at Texas Tech University.
Dr. Washington holds a PhD in Organizational Behavior and Sociology from Northwestern University and a BS in Industrial Engineering (also) from Northwestern University. Prior to life in academia, Dr. Washington was an operations manager at Procter and Gamble and was responsible for manufacturing Zest Bar Soap. On a personal note, Dr. Washington is married and has 3 sons. Two are of the University of Alberta and one is 18 months old. When not at work, Dr. Washington is an avid basketball fan having coached boys’ and girls’ basketball teams for over 25 years.
